Buffalo Station Threatens Cancellation, Again
This Time It Appears They’re Not Bluffing
By Larry Jaffee
Last year the Walford Gazette helped to save EastEnders in Buffalo, NY. While we were victorious in that effort, we knew the decision could always be reversed. We recently received a call from a staff member at the station—an individual who happens to be an EastEnders fan. His news was not good. WNED has decided not to renew the contract when it expires at the end of the January 2000 because the staion was unhappy with the amount of financial contributions it received during the last fundraising drive.
EastEnders viewers cannot take their public television broadcasts for granted. If they don’t hear from you with your checks and credit cards, they will not always do what’s right (i.e., put on good programming). Hence, the decent thing to do if you look forward to EastEnders every week—no matter where you live—is to contribute financially whatever you can. It may be the only way we in the U.S. can ensure that broadcasts on public television will continue. Not everyone is lucky to live in an area or can afford a satellite dish that can pick up BBC America.
